My commuting / touring bike has recently died and I need a new model. I decided on a specialised tricross or sport (I am aware of the recent problems which I assume will be ironed out) but cannot decide on which one. It appears that the sport is circa £200 more expensive. Is it worth the extra money?

If you mean the canti brakes, Specialized are bringing out a disk braked version next year, likely to be more expensive though

Grab the Sport however.............if you can see past the badge this may give you more bang for your buck, if you are looking for a CX bike to use as a commuter.

Saw one on Sunday and as the owner of 2x Tricross (long story), I was impressed.

I've got a Sport, so I thought it worth the extra. I wouldn't want to judge what 'worth' means to anyone else.

Fantastic bike, though.

the entry level tricross has 2300 shifters which are pita and I think the sport has both up and down on the brakes which would be dead handy. Worth it IMO long term for that.

I love my tricross (entry level one) but sometimes I wonder if discs would make my life less scary and the carbon forks lighten the front even more and a rack makes it pretty unstable when walking

I'm holding out for the 2012 Tricross Apex Elite with disc brakes

I've got a Comp version - so have spent extra cash - and love it. One of the first thing I noticed on my rural commute was that carbon forks did make a big difference on the bumpier bits of my commute.

Take a look at the Genesis Vapour - my brother just recently got one, and it seems to be a very good bike!

Carbon forks + disc brakes? Something about that is making me feel rather uncomfortable. Am I wrong?

Did Spesh give up doing the single speed tricross, then? I'd love to find one second hand and use it as a winter fixed but I'd imagine most of their owners are keeping hold of them!

I think there were a couple on ebay recently...

I'm looking at CX bikes at the moment and I got excited when I saw that.

But then I though. Hmmmmm - SRAM APEX gearing & disc breaks, where have I seen that spec before? Oh yeah on the Boardman CX Team which also comes with a carbon fork (the Tricross Apex Elite is alloy fork), and all for £900.

I have the basic Tricross, the extra cash for gear shifters seemed excessive to me. I prefer the colour too - matte black and grey

Have to say I'd be tempted to buy the 2012 with disc brakes but I expect you can get a decent discount on the 2011. Evans had the Tricross at £100 off recently. Mind you, they a Cannondale with Tiagra for £700 if thats what you're looking for.
