I found an old Computer Shopper magazine cover disk in a drawer and was about to bin it when I spotted that it had a free Speech Recognition application on it. I thought it might be handy since my two-finger typing is pretty slow ...

My dear friends at Cycle Chat ... I have just installed an old speech recognition system to save me having to type my posts to you. Let me test it, to see if it is safe to let loose on my system. I will dictate this passage and see what it makes of it ...

TalkItTypeIt thought I said:

Oh well, looks like I'll have to start saving up for Dragon Naturally Speaking! ;)

(Ha - at least it got Speech Recognition System right!)

You inserted the donkey flange in the wrong way... switch it off, back on and try it again.

I used to be able to ring our local Odeon cinema and ask what time a film was being shown. A few years ago i rang and was routed a centralised computer switchboard which took me by surprise.

Computer : "Welcome to Odeon cinemas, please state the name of the town or city where your nearest cinema is located."

Me : "Oh sh*t"

Computer : "I believe you require Stoke-on-trent"

I was laughing so much i had to hang up.

Friends have got the Dragon software (2 licences) for two dyslexics in the family, but maybe this software just doesn't understand the way you talk?

My Mum once tried to ring a central number to find out the opening times of a local Post Office. The computer asked for her postcode, and repeatedly failed to understand her, and asked for it again. I was in another room, and could hear her increasingly frustrated attempts to repeat it in a way that would be understood - she gave up in the end.

My Mum speaks in a voice only slightly less well spoken than the Queen....

I would, only I'm still running a 10 year old PC with Windows XP!

I spent 10 minutes carefully reading training passages for it, and I think I speak reasonably clearly.

I've read good reviews of the Dragon software and it is on my shopping list!

Knowing Colin's other hobby maybe it was the slurring it had trouble with

With your Elvis Presley and wasp-waist and swivel-hippy, show you had, and I must say it showed it first self in pictures with the rhythmic contrapole of the wobbling of the hipper, sideways with the head and tilty, gave him that expression both also with a little doggy-lublike in the eyebold which he conveyed to the smaller femailode of the specie, coupled with his music because he did trittly-how fine on the strims, helped him along the roamer. I heard it first of all on a record in the early mordy: I was doing the shavit-huff with my razor blade, which of course is a safety one, and suddenly, suddenly he did a little syncopole or a drop-it and how, or something he did and caused a jerkit over a pimplode and I've been suffering ever since!

The later versions of Dragon are good they get most of it right even with the TV on low in the background, and it is still quicker to correct it than I can type if its anything longer than a few paragraphs.

I ordered one of the copies for the family when it came up during last years Amazon Black Friday deals ... she seemed happy with the price, whether it would come up in this year's deals I've no idea.
