A road I cycle often is used by speeding rat runners, even though there is a school crossing on this road. The council have tried speed humps but many rat runners have learnt to position there car to avoid the humps.
I have noticed during the past few weeks that the rat runners have gone and I believe it is due to the roadworks which have reduced the road to one lane controlled by traffic lights.

I was thinking a good way to stop rat runners is to redesign the road to have a section which is single lane and controlled by traffic lights with good width cycle lanes either side.

I think the thing with many "rat runners" is that they feel they must beat the time it would have taken them going the normal way, hence go faster than they really should.

I've actually been 'overtaken' whilst I was driving at a reasonable speed down a 'rat run' - lots of speed humps that I slowed down for, a 'mum' in a people carrier, ragged it past me (right outside the primary school), bounced/flew over a few speed humps and was one car ahead of me in the queue. I just thought 'her husband ain't going to be happy when the suspension fails'.

Only option is to block off the end of roads making residential roads of access only and not an alternative to main roads.

I live on a road that is only just wide enough for cars to get down and some chunts hack down that road so fast you can hear he suspension on the parked cars rocking in the wake. It's horrible because a family a few doors up have about six kids who (despite what anyone says to them) play in the street. We've asked the council what can be done and the long and the short of it is that nothing can be done until someone dies. fark.

Buy an old banger, tax and MOT it, and park it up in such a way so it makes a chicane. Problem solved.
