Once I shared office space with a German company's staff (you can guess what's coming). They were quite an uppity bunch so a colleague pinned a large Spitfire poster on our wall. I'm afraid it didn't do much for entente cordiale. I guess Soton is not a hotspot for German tourists!

When BMW bought Rover, the BMW gaffers were taken for a tour of the sites. They went round Longbridge and were taken into 'The Flight Shed'.

"Why is it called The Flight Shed?" asked one of the Germans.
"We assembled engines for Spitfires here" was the answer.

A German lad came to work at Lucas when I was in Petrol Injection.

The laboratory where Gasoline testing was done was at Lucas Diesel Systems, formerly C.A.V., formerly Simms in Acton, West London.

A colleague across the office shouted "Where are you going to be next week?" to which I replied loudly "ACTON".

The German lad stood up in surprise and looked around.

I know Supermarine was based at Southampton, but I don't really like the proposed monument. May be it would be better with a Me109e on a big plinth being shot down, like I had in my bedroom, only mine were suspended from the ceiling by cat gut. They could also have a Hawker Hurricane shooting down a Me110.

...which is the only valid reason ever for inviting Angela Merkel into your bedroom.
