Do you think that sports where judges award points e.g. ice skating, diving off boards or that weird thing where they make horses walk all funny and even gymnastics actually count as sports? I can't see it for the life of me and think they are just performances.

Any sport where you aren't the fastest, first, score the most, jump the highest, furthest etc...... is not really a sport imo.

There are hudereds of reasons why someone who is genuinely better doesn't win based on a panel of judges opinions and scores.

I do agree, they should however be included in the Olympics/Commonwealth Games etc as they are competitive performances and entertaining at that.

But if you can't beat someone without the aid of a third party scoring system then you are right... Not a sport (in the terms purest form IMO)

Are they sports ? Yes, of course they are, they just have an element of opinion in the measurement - to compete in these sports is just as valid as in others, it is just the final ranking that leaves a little to be desired !

I used to be purist on this topic but now I'm old and grey, I've realised that if enough people like doing it and enough like watching it then that's reason enough.

.. and where would you place ski jumping. Partly decided by distance and partly by style.

Take the style element away. If the jumper lands without falling or touching the snow with his/her hands then the distance counts.

As already mentioned, sports scores should be measurable. Style, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder and the beholder can be very biased for a variety of reasons (politics, personal prejudice, etc).

Barnet,
IMHO, any sport that is decided by judges is open to abuse. Different judges tend to look for different things, hence why the judges scores often differ from each other. There could also be some personal matters creeping into the scoring, say if one judge doesn't like a competitor for whatever reason.

How is a judging panel for a ballet contest any more a sport than a singing or talent contest like the X factor or Britains got Talent?

It isn't ALL opinion, though is it... presumably (?) judges are ticking off a list of moves/manoeuvres of various levels of difficulty and so on, to help inform their opinion.

I was quite a reasonble diver* in my younger days... haven't got the bottle any more though

*(yes, yes, ha ha ha  )

hm.. is the referee in football (other sports) not also a judge ? Was the player offside ? Don't see a difference myself.. its subjective (interfering with play rule).
The 6N last weekend was a case in point - Was Godman's challenge a yellow card ?
Why didn't Flannery go to bin at least ? Why did the French player who killed the ball 1M from his try line not get yellow when Healy was given Yellow for supposedly denying a try scoring opportunity ?
