Due to age and health I need to get an electric bike as I definitely do not want to walk up hills. I currently ride a Trex 7.4FX hybrid. This is at the sporty-end of hybrids with what I would describe as a relaxed road bike geometry. I want a similar style electric bike whereas the majority on offer seem to be city bikes with quite an upright ride position.
Any suggestions for what bike would suit my needs? Budget up to £2.5k.
Thanks for any help.

Good morning,
Momentum Voya for £1k?
As someone with a Mahle X35 I wonder if the motor on this would be underpowered outside of the flat city streets.

It is quoted as 30Nm which is quite low if someone is buying an e-bike because they need, rather than want, an e-bike.

I’m not a weight weeny but that 30Nm has to help haul an 18kg, before luggage, rider etc. up hills. If the numbers are real and comparable that’s 75% of what the Mahle offers and the X35 is often criticised for a lack of torque.

With 42x36 as a bottom gear and given what the OP has said about himself I can imagine the need to get off and push up longer steeper hills.

I would also have reservations about the 250Wh battery. Remove say 20Wh as the BMS may decide this is too close to flat and another say 50Wh as the battery decays after a number of charge/discharges cycles and there isn’t much left, especially if it is cold.

Mind you at £999 it’s almost worth buying 2, one just as a spare battery!

Bye

Ian

Of course. Look at fitness e-bikes like the Ribble Hybrid AL e or Cube Hyde Race. They have a sporty, forward-leaning position similar to your Trek, perfect for your budget and hills. A quick test ride at a local dealer is your best next step.

Depending on the hills you have to deal with a mid motor might be better, which is why I went for a Specialized SL 4. Great fun and it's nice to have the motor when I need it.

You could fit Varstrom TSDZ8 motor and 15-20Ahr 48V battery for under £1k to your current bike. Best of both worlds, familiar bike with electric assist.

Thanks for all your responses so far. It is giving me a lot to explore besides trying some bikes at a local shop.
Whyte bikes were suggested to me as a possibility, although would have to be 2003/4. Anyone any knowledge of them.
