I stripped the rear cassette yesterday to give it a good clean before the winter grime sets in.

It's a 10 speed Shimano 105 cassette and the middle three cogs were a bugger to remove - they had all made small notches in the freehub splines and required a chain whip and a gentle nudge with a screwdriver to get them off. A quick google showed this is a common problem with 8/9/10 speed aluminium freehubs and, as it is only 10 months old it went back together.

Nice 20 mile commute this morning and, when changing to lower gears, the pedalling got harder then a lot easier as I changed down - the rear cogs were put on 12, 13, 14, 16, 15, 17, 18 ......

Trust me, it's a bit of a shock to the legs going from 16 to 15 then 17 in relatively quick succession when trying to get up a steep hill!!

Hah..hah........ PS Make sure the lock ring is tight - will stop some of the 'tooth bite' into the freehub body.

Had the same problem with my CK aluminum freehub body so I upgraded to the steel body.

Must have felt pretty weird to shift down a gear only to shift up. Anything like trying to climb that last step on the stairs that doesn't exist?
