I was so impressed with a car transporter driver's awareness of me and courteous waving me through what could have been a tricky situation that I checked my video footage, got the company details and sent in an email via their website last night. I'll let the email chain speak for itself from here:
"Please can this message be passed to the Transport Manager - thanks.

I'm a commuter cyclist in Birmingham. I would like it if you could pass my thanks onto the driver of one of your transporter lorries which was in Birmingham this morning. We met here [http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?rlz=1C1CHNU_enGB328GB328&q=gooch+street+birmingham&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x4870bc6361146c2b:0x5a8aea506c89a085,Gooch+St,+Birmingham&gl=uk&ei=iyAOT4acNMiGhQe77KXIBA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CB8Q8gEwAA ]
at maybe 08.15 this morning (11 Jan). He had no cars on the transporter. Hopefully you will be able to work out who he is from these details. He was stopped at the lights wanting to turn left out of Gooch St onto Sherlock St. I was filtering to the white line on his right (to turn right) when the lights changed and he began to move off. His turning circle meant he was going to take the space I would have needed to go through. The Thank You is because (a) he showed awareness of me and of the potential danger and stopped (as did I in fact, thinking he might not have seen me). This avoided him forcing me onto the pedestrian refuge, or worse, against the railings on it and (b) he then kindly waved me through which he didn't have to.
It's unfortunate that there is sometimes a perceived antipathy between cyclists and drivers. It really doesn't have to be like that and I ride to give the same care and courtesy to other road users as I expect from them. It's nice once in a while to be able to say Thank You like this. I got your company details (but not the reg no of the vehicle) off my helmet cam footage."
Got an email back today as follows:
"Dear Mr xxxxxx,
On behalf of our Managing Director, xxxxxxx, may I thank you for taking the time and trouble to provide such positive feedback about one of our drivers. As a Company we have nearly 140 drivers who are delivering and collecting vehicles on a daily basis, so to get such positive feedback about any one of our driving team is always welcome. I'm delighted to advise you that we have quickly ascertained that our driver is xxxxxxxxx, who is based at our facility near Wolverhampton. He has been informed of the feedback you have provided the Company about his actions.
As a Company we are passionate about providing appropriate recognition to colleagues who emulate our Company Values. I am also pleased to advise you that your e-mail will now become a recommendation for xxxxx to be nominated for a Quarterly Regional RACE Award. RACE stands for Really Appreciate Cxxxxx Employees and is open for other colleagues, customers, and members of the public to provide positive feedback about any one of our employees. I hope your feedback results in xxxxx gaining the final recommendation.
Mr xxxxxx, thank you once again for taking the time to contact the Company. I trust you continue to cycle through Birmingham without incident.
Kind regards,
xxxxxxxx
Human Resources Director
xxxxxxxx"
To which I replied:
"xxxx
Thanks for this. I'm glad my email found its way through to the right person. For what it's worth, here is the video

It doesn't look much but little things like this mean a lot. I hope xxxxx gets the RACE award!
Maybe you can use this in some way to reinforce a positive message with all your drivers about cyclists. Happy to correspond more about that if you like.
Thanks again."
