I've got some pricey Michelin Pro3 Race tyres and the rear one is looking very square after only 1000 miles (I'm quite heavy).

How square is too square?

I can't really afford to replace this tyre quite yet but don't want to continue using it if it's worn out.

I've had similar problems with Pro Race 3s. I usually run them until they feel thin (take the tyre off and feel the thickness of the tread part between finger and thumb), until it gets lots of cuts (they seem to cut up quite easily) and/or until I start getting lots of pun*****s. Also, as I run red ones, I don't feel too bad changing them once they get dirty/grotty looking and don't come clean in the washing machine.

If they look like this, then they're too square...

My rear PR3 has also squared-off significantly with time. I have no idea how many miles, but much less than other tyres.
So far not an issue per-se, but when pushed hard on a tight bend the rear feels a little squirmy. Otherwise P*ncture resistance so far is still OK. Some guy on YACF ran his 'till the casing showed through without too many issues!
I guess it's the small price you pay for riding such an excellent performing tyre.

I've had NO flats since using these tyres and they have very few cuts.

As I said, it's about 1100 miles now. I haven't felt anything when riding - the rear tyre just looks fairly square now that's all. Because they are expensive tyres I'll just keep using it until it starts causing trouble - hopefully I'll get another 1000 miles before it goes in the bin.

I would assume that cornering could become an issue with square tyres?

The front tyre still looks like new, so no issues there.
