There's a mountain bike on ebay fairly near to me going cheap. It's described as having a 'squeaky crank'.

Is this likely to be a sign of something expensive to fix?

It may be nothing other than cleats squeaking on the pedals, or it may be the bottom bracket, which is fairly cheap to replace. However, it just could be a frame crack. If you decide to go for it, don't forget with private purchases you have no comeback. There may be a good reason why it is cheap.
