My girlfriend and I have booked flights to Colombo, Sri Lanka for end Dec- a 2 week trip – A search of the www turns up lots of organised trips in Sri Lanka and several mentions of 4 waymarked national long distance cycle routes- but absolutely nowhere can we find any detailed descriptions or maps of the waymarked routes EXCEPT I did find http://www.explorelanka.com/Biking_Poster.pdf- I am told that probably only 1 exists anyway!- have also tried all the usual places like Stanfords in London. Have also had an enquiry in with the Sri Lanka tourist board who will contact Colombo to see if they can get more info, but thats been a few weeks ago now!

Those 4 national routes are the best kept secret I’ve come across! Does anyone have any maps, route notes or other info re cycling in Sri Lanka please? We simply want to have a leisure cycle tour about 50 or 60 miles per day or so carrying our own luggage in panniers on touring cycles, so we are able do some better quality dirt tracks as well as tarmac (we want to avoid busy roads as far as possible) – we really don’t want a guide or driver, but are aiming to arrange some homestays too and meet locals. I have downloaded a gps map for Sri Lanka and can view routes planned on Google Earth, fascinating! In the absence of any other info we’ll head north to go via Negambo in the first instance before heading inland, avoiding main roads or anything barmy like cycling in Colombo

It's a long time since I was last there, but road signs of any sort were conspicuous by their absence, so good luck!

Don't suppose Sri Lanka is mapped on satnavs, either?

When I toured Sri Lanka in 2005 I used a Nelles 1:450,000 map. It got me around and often locals would point out routes and sometime ride to show the way. The roads are not good and many are just tracks through the jungle.

If you are going to Negambo call at Cycle City he knows most of the local serious cyclists. They may be able to help you with routes or more local maps.
