Welcome. Sadly poor road srufaces are not just confined to Manchester . Some potholes here in Cambs you ride down one side through the vegetation and rubbish in the bottom and up the other.

Yep, some of it is dreadful, our local council (Wilmslow) did some improvements, to the roads where cars were dissapearing into thte potholes, these roads are now lovely but very short, more people dont complain as they drive cars like Range Rovers round here with massive tyres and bouncy suspension so my rock hard Ally framed Cannondale hybrid battering across potholes is not really much of a problem for most drivers.

If I dont like the road surface I pull out and just let the cars wait, pull in when it improves enough to let me do so, but my commute is probably not so busy and the drivers less unpredicatable than those round Bury New Road.

Matty - it's not the potholes on Bury New Road that are the main problem; it's virtually every single grid and cover that's sunken to varying degrees. I counted on my way home tonight and I counted 3 that were not sunken. And the worst was probably 4 inches below the level of the road. Absolutely shocking! Cheadle - Cheetham Hill is the Old Road and cut through Crumpsall? Have you been through bits of Crumpsall lol ?

Reporting sunken grids works also, I don't know your roads but it sounds like you've got a fair bit of reporting to do.

Mr P's suggestion about contacting the council responsible for the stretches of road in question will get results, the CTC website automatically or by magic contacts the relevant authority, where it's on the border will probably require you to contact both councils.

It does work.

They'll know where I live and work before long as my commute will the best road surface round here at this rate.

Welcome!!

I too commute into Manchester and agree that *some* of the cycle lanes can be useful, and that the roads are generally in a pretty poor state near the edges... the simple answer is to ride further out from the gutter - this has a couple of advantages..

1. You have space to go if someone comes too close
2. You avoid most of the rubbish/potholes etc.

Someone will be along in a minute to quote Cyclecraft at you. Whilst I haven't read the book it certainly seems to be a good starting point for getting tips on where/how to ride more assertively and safely.

Hope you find the forum useful. :becool:

and No.3 is this avoids a situation where you are riding in and out ... pulling out around a pothole when the drivers least expect it. As said, ride 3 feet out as it keeps you in a straight line and no surprises for drivers.

the other thing i'm miffed about is the new road surfaces around here they are laying. they are really ruff with a gravel on top. it's like an unfinished surface, vibration is hard on the hands and no sooner is it laid than the surface is being torn up by heavy lorries because the tyres just grib the surface and pull it up. or the heavy lorries just put deep tyre tracks in it. it's shite!

o yea, and a cluster of potholes appeared by my mum's after the heavy rains. about 5 holes. so the council came out... filled in 3 (badly) and left the other 2??? what the feck is that all about

welcome OTH, its not just manchester, in the part of london i live in the roads are a disgrace, they are a miss mash of old repairs, all of which are at different heights. Then there are the pot holes and sunken drains. When i get my road bike hopefully i will have the speed to get out of the curb and can retire from the sport of broken glass dodging.

I've had 3 reported potholes filled in, quite quickly too.

Shame all the other shoot doesn't get sorted out quicker.
It does take time, but I have been reporting the other shoot on http://www.stringupthatdickheaddriver.com and so far there have been 3 hangings, a public flogging and a confiscated spare wheel from offenders in my area.;)
