Hi,

I have a 1" threadless steerer and an 1 1/8" stem. With the shim in position and the stem pinch bolts tightened I have no 'gap' between the faces. The pinch bolts bring the faces together rather than leaving a 2-3mm gap!!!!!!!

The stem is clamped but I am a little concerned as to how safe it is!!!

Why are the faces be touching, can you buy 'thicker' shims.

Hold from wheel between your legs. Apply as much force as you can to turn the bars. If they turn the stem is too loose.

Sounds strange and worrying to me. Breaching the difference between 1" and 1-1/8" meant shim wall thickness of 1.5mm, does it look anywhere near that? If it does are you sure it is not a 1-1/4" stem?

The main concern I have though is that aluminium alloy is not meant to be deformed much, before the part gets weakened, and stem failure is a BIG deal.
