When I started my cycling commute cca 1 month ago, I kind of had a silly milestone at the back of my mind of achieving average moving* speed of 20mph.

Last night on homeward leg I recorded 20.6 mph! It's silly but I feel kinda happy about it.

Now the goal is to do the same on the inbound leg!

If you're interested the homeward leg has 131 ft of climbing, the inbound has 295. 15.5 miles one way.

*edited to clarify as some peeps may have been more impressed than they oughta ;)

I just rely on the auto feature on my computer - when stationary the timer stops - that way I am not tempted to RLJ, and it makes comparisons between runs more related to my riding, and less related to luck of the traffic lights.

But I only really have about 4 sets of lights on my route, plus another 3-4 junctions that can slow me down sometimes.

Wow, that's speedy! I'm sitting here feeling a bit pissed off because I only managed 21 km/h for 16 miles this morning. Should get a bit faster this evening (downhill and tailwind). I never know what my speed is in mph except when I'm timetrialling, where even I can work out that a time of just under 30 minutes for 10 miles is 20 mph (and I'm broken after that...)

My best so far is 18.1 MPH average moving speed. Average for the trip is almost always 15 MPH. I cannot imagine how much extra effort I would need to put in to get over 20 average moving speed let alone average for the trip.

Yep, too many lights and crossings to get any sort of decent long stint.
17mph is the highest I have managed on a 17 mile commute in SE London.

I think it is impressive to have a 15.5 mile commute with so few lights or junctions to get in the way.

Oh hey that's a good way to distinguish between the two. I don't really measure the average for the trip anymore, but I used to be around 15 mph as well.

I guess there is no value in comparing averages over two different commutes - it's really only a personal thing to see if I am getting fitter or not.

Yeah I lucked out. Funny thing was that for a long time I thought that it would be a hellish commute to ride(Weybridge to Bracknell) based on the roads that I drove into work. But I managed to find a totally sweet route, which I now use when driving as well. Just goes to show that it pays to keep an open mind.

Aha, ok so I'm more like 17-18 mph moving average (likewise don't RLJ hence the overall average is always around 15mph). Still got a way to go to hit 20mph though.

Nice speed you have there & impressive you manage to do less 'climbing' than on my 15-15.5 mile direct commute... in Cambridgeshire.

That's not a bad target for myself actually might take that up. I'm pretty damn fast on the commute TO work, keeping up with traffic most of the way there's only one stretch of road that's a 50mph zone and about half way along that cars have sped up faster than me.

But the trip back is more gradual uphill most of the way I guess I average about 16-17mph, so I might build up to your target for the way back!

Half term certainly helps in and around Manchester. I had my 2nd or third ever 20mph leg on Wednesday. Clear roads, light tailwind, no cars. But no climbign at all and only 5.5 miles. So well done you!

I just use my trip computer - which stops counting when stationary. Hence all the slowing down and accelerating for lights really effect the average. My rolling speed is a few mph higher and doesnt' change much from day to day. it's gettin gthe clear run that matters.

some impressive speeds being shown!
yesterday was my first commute on my new bike, i managed 12.8mph average, thats including stops and whatnot though as my cycle computer isn't the hight of sophistication.
today my AVS was 12.9. tomorrow i want to be pushing 13-14.
i'd say when actually up to speed though i'm easily doing 15-18mph regularly.
its all downhill from there methinks as i get more used to the bike and fitter from the cycling.
