I think this, or similar scheme has been mentioned before on here, but it seems Google have granted these a bit of cash to help develop. I'm a bit sceptical but a quick read of the web site throws up some interesting solutions to obvious problems.

I have always loved the idea of Monorail travel. I think its a terrible shame its never taken off (perhaps because it costs a fair bit to put in the rails and stops, plus the firms like First who tend to take on this stuff charge their passengers a fortune).. but this is smaller and probably more possible logistically.

Interesting idea.

OK for cold/wet weather but I wouldn't want to be in those "housings" on a warm sunny day for very long (if at all).

How about a monorail/cable system that has carriages carrying people under gravity? Then slant the cable the other way for the return journey. Obviously you'd need some means for lifting/lowering the ends of the cables, but the vehicle itself needn't be powered.
