Creaks from the BB are usually..... 1) Chain Ring Bolts, 2) BB not correctly tightened - e.g. cartridge or external bearing cartridge not tight to frame. Then bearings being worn....
My MTB's gone through 2 cartridge BB's in the last few years (quite a few) but both time they have developed a little play, but no creaking....
Chain ring bolts are no. 1 suspect - usually a little tick or creak at first.
PS shops don't tell you much if anything....
As for preventative maintenance - you need to do a couple of little checks here and there - squeeze them in the busy home life. Last night I very quickly removed the bar stem, slapped a little grease on the steerer, and put back together - less than 5 min job. Why....... I could hear a few little clicks from the bar area when pulling on them on the way home. Clicks gone this morning.
I hate any noise on my bikes....
