I'm trying this out to see how I get on (though I do seem to be getting through the data on my phone, so I may need to up that).

When I get a Personal Record (I assume that's what PR is), how do I see what I did it in previously?

Have any of you set up your own segments and if so why? I was thinking about doing one because the shortcut I take isn't on there and I would like to see how long it takes but it does cross several junctions so I don't know if it would be considered a safe segment - haven't quite worked out what makes a safe or unsafe segment, considering that I have an unsafe place or two on my route and segments don't have rankings there but a longer segment covering both areas does.

To see your previous efforts "star" the segment from one of your rides, then click on "My segments" on the Dashboard, click on the segment you want to check, then "My results" and it'll bring up your history.

To set a new segment, bring up a ride you've done which includes the segment you want to set, then click on "create new segment". The dialogue box will open up and you can click and drag the start and finish points to create the segment you want.

Firstly, turn the data off. Just run it on GPS. Iwait until iI get home to upload the ride via WiFi.

I can only create a segment on my PC, not on my phone. The 'dangerous' is something you can designate it as if you want to.

I've made quite a few segments, usually decent hills which for some reason haven't had a segment put on them or sometimes just a section of a route I might do regularly, you usually find that quite a few others have done them too. I think a segment has to be flagged by somebody else as being hazardous although I've seen numerous ones which cross lights, or junctions or are down steep winding single track roads and you do wonder what goes through somebodies mind when they create them. However, you can set a segment to private so it will only show on your rides, and that may be the best option is you're crossing junctions and it's purely for yourself.

Dangerous generally means a segment get's taken off or can't be created. It's a bit subjective and it's been known for folk to flag segments deliberately as their KOM was taken (yes we know who you are Daryl of South Manchester).

Creating segments can be a bit of a soul destroyer as well- so you think you did well on a part of a ride, go about setting up the segment, Strava tells you it'll take a minute or two to update the results, turns out you're 102nd by the time it back dates everyone's effort- gives you a target though!

As PeteXXX said, turn off all data, just have gps running. I don't know if this helps or not, but I also put it in airplane mode. I've done a few 7 or 8 hour days on the bike and come home with 40 or 50 per cent battery left. Of course if you use the phone for owt else while out, that'll change. I'm not fussed about seeing how I'm doing while out, I just upload the ride when I get home, and have a gander on the PC

Yes. Quite a few of the CC contingent, and a few 'friends' of ours had someone doing this. He was deliberately targeting one person especially.
Well, well, I'll have to remember that one, I wonder if it'll work if I flag several hundred peoples rides over the same segment.
Was anything able to be done about it?

You can also select the "My Results" option from the drop-down (default "Overall") above the list to the right on any segment on any ride (i.e. no need to star first).

So if your phone is in airplane mode it can still use the GPS?

Lots to think about above, thanks!
Yes, it will record your movements, but obv with data off, you can't see it on the map, till you turn data on again. So, I get Strava app up and running outside my house, turn off everything except gps, bung the phone in my jersey pocket and off I go. Turn it all back on again when I get home, and bob's yer uncle.

There used to be a great segment on the red downhill stretch of the Waterdale trail below Philips Park. The most testing but fun part of the whole ride, it has a berm at the top just when you're picking up speed, and it was easy to carry too much speed into the turn. Below was a steep slope, but being covered in leaf litter and an absence of trees and stumps, the penalties for going over the edge weren't huge compared with a lot of, say Peak or Pennine bridleways. Some pillock flagged it as dangerous.
