If you think it's tough on the streets, then don't look up.

Kirkstall Gardens gained a small flock of parakeets this spring. They'd wizz around thirty feet above the ground, chirruping away, like teenagers, but greener, and just that little bit higher.

This morning....green feathers. A sparrowhawk rises.....

If only we could deal with errant teenagers by releasing a few sparrowhawks at them...

Mind you, a Golden Eagle can do some damage.

Do you think a sparrowhawk eating a parakeet is like a British person eating Thai? Exotic, but more numerous than you might think...

I have not seen them in Streatham Park, perhaps SW16 is a flight too far?

I spotted a goldcrest the other day - tiddly things with orange mohicans.

They're known to hang-out in Morden on a regular basis, so they're not fussy...

Parrots seem to be very terratorial, we live next to a park and never see them, however there are 100's in Greenwich Park which is onkly 300m as the parrot flys.

Would you believe it - I have just spotted a flock of parakeets from my window (I was watching two squirrels clean each other at the time). It feels like Streatham "Spring Watch". All I need now is a bird of prey...

I though curry wasn't exotic enough, in terms of British tastes, it's virtually native now....

I watched my own little Attenborough moment play out this morning, on the window. Two spiders, one sitting still ina web, the other mobile. The mobile one is watching a little fly - as the fly walks about, the spider turns to keep it in sight, and creeps closer. Finally the fly flies off, and the spider turns once more and spots the other spider on it's little web. And pounces on it, and eats it...

SHOCK HORROR! Parakeets have been declared a pest and can be shot without a license! This can only mean that some permanent secretary got a pellet in the eye...

(*sniff*) ... wish they'd do the same thing about the peasants pheasants. No - wait!

Having had a face-to-face with a buzzard at very close quarters, I can assure you they are scary! You usually see the soaring high in the sky and they look so peaceful... I've never got that close to a sparrowhawk though.
