Help! I need to get my sprocket carrier off before Tuesday afternoon. I've never taken it off - it came screwed onto the wheel when I picked it up from the builder nearly 3 years ago.

I've bent my basic chainwhip in the process - is there another method short of buying a forged chainwhip?
Can I put anything onto the threads as well?

What's a sprocket carrier?

It's the proprietary Miche system - a carrier is threaded onto the hub, then you can swap sprockets without needing a chainwhip...just undo the lockring.

I need it off to put my disc covers on.

This is for a track hub. The Miche sprocket slides on to a carrier, then the carrier screws on to the hub, whereas a normal fixed sprocket screws directly on to the hub.

The method for removing a tight sprocket is to wrap a bit of chain around the sprocket and clamp it in a vice then turn the wheel. If you don't have a vice, there's this, but do it the opposite way:

It's using your frame to hold the sprocket still whilst you turn the wheel. The pictures show how to tighten a sprocket, so you need to both wrap the chain and turn the opposite way!

Also wrap a rag around the bottom bracket to protect the paint.
