"Studio Ghibli - Brilliant!" - My daughter

Idly browsing the DVDs in our local library a few months ago I stumbled across a cartoon called Spirited Away in the racks and thought 'Didn't I read something about that somewhere?' Read the reviews on the back and thought 'got to be worth a quid'. Told 'er indores - she says 'they're never going to sit through a two hour Japanese film with subtitles.'

She was wrong. They were enthralled. And the eldest recorded a whole bunch of Studio Ghibli movies when they came up recently. Watched Porco Rosso last night - fantastic!

Love it when the kids pick it up and run with it...

Ghibli is great stuff. Princess Monoke is imho better than spirited away. Kiki's delivery service is great for cat lovers.

The older stuff is better and more imaginative then the more recent offerings.

Funny this, I was talking to my brother about this today.

The Ghibli team are awesome. Possibly their only weak film is the Earthsea one, done by Miyazaki's son. There are some that are distinctly more adult, in particular Grave of the Fireflies (one of the best films about the impact of war ever made) and Only Yesterday. Pom Poko is much more serious and difficult than some (despite being about shape-changing racoons) and Princess Mononoke is also quite violent, if that matters to you. Howl's Moving Castle will appeal to those who liked Spirited Away. The most recent Ponyo on the Cliff By the Sea is lovely (and for younger kids) as is My Neighbour Tottoro - easily the simplest and best of their films IMHO. My nephew is a particular fan of their early adaptation of the Lupin Sansei comics, The Castle of Cagliostro - and it is fun. Real Ghibli fans swear by Nausica and the Valley of the Winds and Laputa - Castle in the Sky, though. I like some of their minor films quite a lot too - Porco Rosso (you mentioned), The Cat Returns and Kiki's Delivery Service (which will also appeal to younger kids).

Everything they do makes Disney look trite, so it's no surprise that Disney are gradually trying to buy them up...

Studio Ghibli films are amazing and 'Spirited Away' is my favourite, followed by 'Kiki's Delivery Service'. To call a Studio Ghibli animation a cartoon is sort of like calling a Cervelo carbon fibre bike frameset a hack bike

Yep, we have many studio Ghibli films, stunning films in every sense and so refreshing compared to Disney.

Spooky, my little girl saw Princess Mononoke yesterday and will not stop talking about it.Definitely a hit, despite her mother worrying about the more gruesome bits.

Aha! Thank you! Was trying to remember it's name....sure we saw some of this on TV a year or two back, me and the Mrs thought we'd had our drinks spiked or something. Must try to watch all of it.

The special weapons testicles tend to surprise western audiences!

We were given Ponyo last week and the kids love it, gonna have to look out for some more Ghibli for them. I'm more of a Looney Tunes and Tex Avery fan myself but I love the real animation of this studio - great stuff!

Ghibli are ace!! I love their stuff. Howl's Moving Castle is great (based on the Diana Wynne-Jones story), but I reckon Laputa and Nausicaa Valley of the Wind are better. It does make disney look rubbish (apart from Fantasia).....

Ghibli had a new film out in Japan last year based on The Borrowers, Arrietty. I think it's released in an English version early next year:

We've seen this trailer, think it was on a DVD rental, looks great - my 8 year old has read The Borrowers so she's very keen to see this.

My daughter bought this one in Japan last year - it has English subtitles. She has every one of the Ghibli collection on DVD.
