Leicester is vastly better than when I left it in 1989 for Birmingham. I can be a bit proud of coming from there now.

Birmingham, on the other hand, is light years ahead of what people who have never visited it think of the place.

Birmingham gets a bad rap, especially in the media. It's a nice enough place to live and the people are generally warm with a good sense of humour. Leicester is a bit less nice and a lot moanier although that's probably a vocal minority. Not the best cycling country in the South of the city.

I'm pleased someone pitched in with that  - it's lost some of the rock boozers there used to be but we found one pretty close to the centre when we saw Ozzy there recently. Every bit as noisy as a rock pub should be :wahhey:

Must admit I always rather liked the art gallery nr the Town Hall (top of New Street), and the B'ham Botanical Gardens - not huge, just pleasant for an hour or two's wander - there's a bonsai collection there too.

Both myself and the GF are from Brum (didn't actually meet there !) - Stechford m'self, (tho' that's down on it's uppers compare to when I was a kid - the centre really was like a village in the 60's), GF's from Solihull (the posher bit). The place has changed quite a bit - some good, some bad - but it does annoy us a bit when people slag it off - I spent 3 years in Manchester during my degree and that wasn't better, or worse - just different.

Oh, the Science Museum *used* to be well worth a look - but I think it's been moved elsewhere from Newhall St, and not all of it's on display - had some pretty big stationary engines and steam locos.

Thanks for the Botanical Gardens recommendation Henshaw, perfect.

The reason we're wanting to go to Birmingham is because we've exhausted the possibilities in Nuneaton of a weekend.

We did this in German lessons last night. Consensus of opinion is:
1) Take a tour of Birmingham by catching the No.11 bus - so famous it has its own calendar. See ALL of Birmingham this way.
2) You can either go to St Andrews or Villa Park. Although nobody seemed particularly keen.
3) You can visit such great sights as Winson Green nick.
4) Go for a walk down by the canal. Visit the Malt Shovel - Bill Clinton's favourite pub.

2) You can either go to St Andrews or Villa Park. Although nobody seemed particularly keen.

If this was a consideration I'd say St Andrews. No football preference but if you're using public transport Perry Barr isn't a great place to visit to get to Villa Park.

4) Go for a walk down by the canal. Visit the Malt Shovel - Bill Clinton's favourite pub.

If you're planning on sitting outside avoid the canal dead end to the side. All the man made rubbish and also nasty smelling algae tends to collect outside. Not pretty and stinks in the summer on a hot day. Probably not considering sitting outside this time of year though :cold:

No need to go to Perry Barr. Just get the train from New St.

Or walk from town. It's not that far.

I used to live in Perry Barr. Looked out of our front window and watched the cars passing by on the flyover. It was above the parade of shops where a young black girl was shat a few years back. It wasn't a very nice place to live.

The walk from Perry Barr station to Villa Park is dodgy enough. Match days are fine with so many people.

If you walked from town you go past the mosque which was formerly named after Saddam Houssain. It got renamed when it all kicked off again with the last invasion of Iraq.
