I allowed myself to be sucked into some commuter racing this morning.
Cruising along a nice dual carriageway when some guy on a nice looking far superior Felt bike and a pair of white road shoes slowly comes along side, who was on the shared path not the road. I'd seen him earlier about 1.5kms at a traffic light controlled RAB.
I'm thinking to myself, I'm on the heavy hybrid, full mudguards/mudflaps and panniers, riding up slight drag into a head wind not much point trying when I'm giving the other rider such a big advantage.
I look back a my speedo and realise I have speeded up, so I think I just maintain this faster cruise pace and see what happens.
The guy uses a junction to try and grab my back wheel but misses, so I very slowly ease away until stopped by a pedestrian crossing, the other rider stops right behind me. As we pull away he again tries for my rear wheel and again fails, he obviously running out of steam as I start to pull away at a faster rate, finally we go our separate ways.
It's the first decent commuter race I have had as it was over a distance of about 4km with not much getting in the way and virtually no traffic, shame I wasn't on the road bike would have been an equal contest then.

If you left him behind when you were on your heavy bike, it wouldn't have been a race at all on your road bike!

The best races are the ones you win without racing!

It was satisfying to know that I can still get the old wreck moving if required, it will make interesting viewing when I review the rear camera footage this evening.

There was a slight doubt as I wrongly assumed someone wearing road shoes to commute might be a roadie in disguise. From my old roadie days I understand the difference between a roadie and a standard commuter is basically stamina, as roadie's put in a vast number of miles compared to commuters.

Nice one! I have a cheeky one from Sunday, I'll upload it shortly. I passed a guy on a slight uphill and into a crosswind at about 25mph and told him to jump on, knowing full well there's little or no draft behind me.

With my full mudguards, panniers and very upright hybrid position there is lots of draft behind me to hide in .

I had a good one a few days ago, some bloke in his souped up VW was trying to get past but he was no match for my BMW M3 turbo V8

It was probably a bog standard VW with plastic bits stuck on and a dustbin exhaust, not a match for a turbo M3.

I'd like to partake in a bit of SCR but I rarely see many people on my commute, most are going the other way to me and it's always on my way home in the evening. I did have a woman on a hybrid behind me for about a mile for one stretch yesterday but I don't think that counted as she didn't look like she was commuting or racing.

I'm the same, very rarely meet cyclists going the same way and first time on that section of road which is perfect as it's a dual carriageway with little traffic, at that time of the morning.
