Without boring you the details are as follows.
It's for my granddaughter who is starting Uni......training to be a primary school teacher.
She does have an old laptop (too old to bring up to standard).
She hardly uses the laptop as most things are via her phone.
She IS NOT a computer whizz.

So........I don't want or need to spend a lot.
Any suggestions ??
Thank you.

Used ex-office refurb for less that £350 still have good specs. I got a Lenovo Yoga last year this way and it was alot of money when new with the specs (top processor and large memory) Looked like new.

Plenty of refurb companies on ebay.

Funnily enough, this just popped up on my daily hotukdeals email. Looks a stonking amount of laptop for the money. You could argue the RAM is a little on the low side at 8Gb but is more than adequate for student work, and someone not into gaming.

Being just about to start Uni again myself I was given a spec for a suitable laptop for use in higher ed.

i5 minimum, and I think 8GB ram, and cant remember what else but can probably look it up again if you like. Im pretty sure thrnkne Dadam has linked to was on then list of suitable devices.

As a Student teacher, would she be entitled to an Education Discount?, as offered by Apple? If that is a MacBook would suite the needs of the course.

Indeed, I bought a refurbed 14 inch Lenovo ThinkPad, Win11, with a fairly recent gen Ryzen 5 processor, and 16Gb ram to use as a Zwift computer, does the job well enough, all for a tiny bit less than £300

Forgive me asking, but does she have any kind of qualifying disability?

Because I don't have proper use of my right hand and arm the student loan company gave me a subsidised Lenovo, about a grands worth of laptop loaded with speech recognition and autocorrection software for £200.

Apple and student discount = still stupidly expensive and not that compatible with Uni MS integration

Sorry, nonsense. I thought similarly until I used a MacBook Pro for over a year in an organisation where almost everything was on M365. The whole shebang: Office, Teams, Outlook and Sharepoint. Both web and desktop apps. All fine and TBH I had fewer problems than I had on the previous corporate Windows laptop.
They're not the cheapest option but quality and longevity they're up there in VFM terms.
