My daughter is starting uni.
Was told she needed i7 processor16gb ram 512 gb storage as a minimum for her degree.
She won’t be gaming so doesn’t need graphic cards and sound, so just bought her a basic HP laptop which meets the minimum spec.
As far as I’m am concerned a well used laptop will last 2-3 years.

The simple Uni flow chart is:

Does your degree require you to use specialist software or carry out intensive tasks such as video editing, 3d or CAD design, advanced analytics, database or hyper-v environment hosting etc?

1) Yes - you need a laptop that comfortably exceeds the minimum spec for that software and is compatible with it.
2) No - you need any old laptop that can run Microsoft Office and a web browser.

Realistically if specialist software is needed it is often provided via a VDI rather than being something that needs to be installed to a students laptop.
