But it's been so cloudy of late.... I would like to see the winter sunshine at the moment!

I work some daft shifts. I'm often up and out on my bike before 5 in the morning. I see the benefit of the days getting longer. It's a nice little mental pick me up, when I know the earth is on its journey towards the summer.

Not if you're down under.
I'm not.

Sunsets have actually been getting (ever so slightly) later for about 8 days already! Although sunrises don't stop getting later until about the 31st December, just more daytime between the two from now on. Something to do with the eccentricity of the Earth's orbit or its wobble on its axis :P http://www.timeanddate.com/sun/uk/manchester

Doesn't really become noticeable for another couple of months though. Here's hoping the crazy mild weather continues, I've been loving not arriving to work with numb fingers/toes.

It's still a second shorter today though!
Four seconds longer tomorrow

Today daylight in NH is 1 second shorter than yesterday. Tomorrow it is 4 seconds longer than today . Hence today is shortest amount of daylight , and therefore shortest day. There are oddities where the solstice point is on the previous or next day by a few seconds dependent on the suns zenith time in SH which leads to solstice and shortest days being on different days They don't happen often though.

What do you mean summer is on its way? It happened here on Saturday - it was fifteen degrees and lasted a whole day.

I'm getting out on the bike in the evenings from tomorrow to make use of the extra daylight - 4 seconds....could be the difference between a podium finish this year in the Tdf.

best get your missus to pull the cornflakes from your chin as they do stick well when you fall asleep in them ......... that will also help in the podium finish .
