A reader's letter was printed yesterday:
Cyclists pay nothing towards the upkeep of the roads but constantly complain about the state of them, consider themselves above the law - ignoring traffic lightsand one-way streets - do not show courtesy to fellow road users, behave recklessly and then blame others for their misfortunes. Now they don't want to wear helmets on the dubious grounds that "a pedestrian walking a mile is more likely to die in a road accident than a cyclist".
It is time the traffic laws were enforced on all road users, not just those that can be squeezed by the exchequer.
I assume somebody at the Sunday Times has a cheeky sense of humour and wants to start a war of words. If not, the publication of the above is staggeringly ill-informed, especially when you consider it appeared in the "driving" section. But then, they do refer to "road tax" every week. Hmm.

Obviously talking about motorists...

I see more drivers going the wrong way up one way streets than cyclists doing the same. That doesn't stop cyclists getting yelled at for riding the correct way up the cyclists contraflows!

Jumping red lights? I've had to do more aggressive/emergency braking due to motorists jumping red lights than cyclists.

Behaving recklessly? this is standard practice for a large minority of road users. And have you heard the excuses people come up with when they crash their cars?

... now who has the FAIL!! cup?:giggle:

Here in the state of Victoria, Australia, the Police statistics, i.e. their infringement rates, have shown that cyclists observe the road laws at a higher rate than do motorists, but it doesn't stop our mainstream newspapers continually harping on about how cyclists routinely break laws and don't pay for the roads .

I read somewhere that 87% of car/bike accidents are caused by the car, I think it was in Oz.

You sometimes have to ride with arrogance swagger.
