If you were the cyclist riding into Edinburgh from Linlithgow through Winchburgh this morning........mate, I salute you

It was -12 on the car temp readout and you were flying downhill WITHOUT ANY FACE PROTECTION and an OPEN JACKET

God knows what the windchill factor was but you must have skin like a walrus

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Is this kind of thing the british equivalent of cracking the ice to go for a swim?

His hands had frozen to the bars, shortly after setting off . . .

Been there, done that. At -11 I found that a windproof mid-layer over merino wool base later over a compression base layer was more than enough after 8-9 miles. Time to unzip the jersey! As for no face protection, everything I've tried has ended up with my face getting COLDER after 10 or more miles as it's saturated with phlegm plus saliva & it's started to freeze.

I think it was late Nov and the temp dropped to -3. I rode into work, 4 layers on me upper body and cursing the cold - only to see a lad in a T and shorts locking up his bike. "You're bl**dy mad to ride like that!" He just laughed.

I only used the buff once in the last month. That included the -9 commutes for a 30mph descent. I think it's your hand/feet that are much more the problem in those sort of temps than your face/neck and torso.

Even when it's minus quite a few degrees I get warm enough cycling to unzip the windproof halfway to work. And I'm the sort of rider who starts wearing legwarmers soon as September arrives. Damn, I'll wear them in July if I'm leaving early enough.

Definitely. I've especially found it with toes the last few weeks.

I am fed up with explaining 'how' I'm riding at the moment........ yeh special clothes, spikey tyres etc.......

I am however, being eaten alive by the cold.....it's cracking up any exposed flesh on my face............ I'm having to moisturise about 4 times a day........OMG................................. not funny from an 'ugg' male............

I'm pretty proud of the fact that up during the recent cooooold weather, I've cycled every day (bar one, when I needed the car after work). I have prepared well every morning. On the really cold days I added a vest under my waterproof jacket and jersey, used a balaclava as well as the usual neck tube. Oh and the overshoes and motorbike gloves. However, I was warm setting off, and only slightly hot when reaching work. I didn't really have a choice most days, as the missus usually needs the car, and I really don't want to take the motorbike out with all the salt on the roads.

It was a bit dodgy in the snow with normal (Marathon Plus) tyres, but taking it nice and steady I managed not to fall off once. If you have the right gear, no weather is 'un-cyclable'.
