Had one of those days today. I am Mr Laid back, never react, let crazy car drivers go on ahead. But this morning........

Firstly a young woman in a car behind me decided to flash to a car in front waiting to to turn that it was OK to go -- right across my path. Then as I give her a yard or two's clearance at the next lights ( I thought she might turn left across my path) a car pulls up next to me sees the yard or so space and starts to turn in a 45 degrees to get in front of me. As there are railings to the left of me I found myself knocking on her side window in an ' excuse me I'm here don't crush me against the railings' kind of way.
What she saw it as a crazed cyclist is try to smash his way through her window, she looked absolutely petrified.

I felt a bit guilty.

Surely it's the problem of the vehicle turning across you here. The car flashing its lights (not HC I know) is merely indicating that it is prepared to yield for the turning vehicle, who should in turn be checking that it is safe to carry out the manoeuvre?

Most people see it as a "go on then" gesture. It's actually an "I'm here, just flashing my lights to make you aware of that" gesture in the eyes of the law.
