Right peeps.

This is probably in the wrong place but hey ho.

I have the option of getting a free Youview box from Talktalk (I'm already with Talktalk but if I sign up for a 2 year contract they will throw one in).

I will get a new wireless modem too.

Here's the thing though. I already have a freesat box in the main living room. It's also connected to the modem which is sat in an opposite corner of the room by a long wire.

So, I don't really need the Youbvew box in the living room, although it wouldn't be the end of the world (i player would be useful).

It would be quite nice to have the Youview box in the main bedroom (upstairs and almost directly above the living room) though. Problem is the Youview box needs to be connected (hard wired) to the modem.

Also, I have 3 HDMI ports on my main tv in the living room. I'm using 2 already and the third is on the front of the tv so I don't want a permanent connection in the third. If I do leave the Youview box downstairs, what's the best way to split the HDMI sockets?

Is there a "have cake and eat it option"? That is to have the Youview box downstairs but have it running on the main tv and the bedroom tv? What are these fandango'd plug in internet thingy me bobs I hear about?

Thanks in advance.

Bedroom directly above the living room? Get yourself a nice, long network cable and fix it to the wall.

Although from what I've heard, I wouldn't touch TalkTalk with yours...

I've had Talk Talk TV/Youview for a few months and to be fair I can't fault it (so far!).

I originally ran a long network cable but when I decided that tidying it up seemed too much like hard word I got one of these. It took a bit of fiddling to set up so you might need a hand from someone who knows what they're doing if you're not very IT literate but it works flawlessly now it's setup.

I've been told by talktalk that I can only connect the youview box by ethernet.
Couldn't understand why a bridge won't work so cancelled the order.

They told me that so I just ran a massive lead from the router to the telly for them to use when they installed it then replaced it with one of those "nano routers" I linked to above after they had gone. Works fine.

Alternatively Powerline networking should work fine. You just plug one adapter into a mains socket behind the telly and one into a socket near the router and plug ethernet leads into them.

Cheers! So if I get that nano router it just acts as a repeater in client mode, I plug an ethernet cable from that to the youview box and we're sorted? They also told me that doesn't work but for the life I can't see why or how the thing knows it's not plugged into my original router? :-(

I told them to cancel it and they're sending me free powerline adaptors now but I don't really want them plugged in so will get the adaptor you tried.
Thanks

Yup powerline thats what I would use, I cant understand why they don't make the youview boxes WiFi.

I have the Humax youview box and it is excellent nothing to do with TalkTalk wouldnt personally touch them with a barge pole.

Exactly. I plugged the nano router into a laptop, turned wifi off on the laptop (to verify the router was working), put it into "client mode", connected to my wireless network and verified I could browse the net etc... then plugged the nano router into the Youview box. You can even power it using the USB port on the TalkTalk box so no extra mains adapter.

For some reason it didn't work straight away but a couple of reboots of the Youview and the router and it magically began working and has worked perfectly ever since (at least a few months now).

Cheers for the replies - ordered a couple of the fandangled homeplugs, will see how it goes.

So, I'll position the box in the bedroom.

I'll have a think to see if i can figure out how to run the box to work on the downstairs telly
