I went to the National gallery for an hour 'or so' this morning. Not much point in seeing the Seurat but I was taken by the 'Academy' style paintings Eduard Gaertner and the sketch without people - just buildings, and Menzel's view of the (Tuilleries? - I think) Fab observation...and oh so much to see. The nice person with a smile who served me a double expresso helped too - as did the many touch-screen PC stations where one can peruse and plan. (No point me trying to follow a course though 
).
Also popped along to give a nod to the Fighting Temeraire - you sea it once you want to sea it again and again...

I had a look at that one yesterday - I quite liked it. The other Turners didn't quite do it for me. I'm not arty at all but some of them were worth a look. I quite liked Canaletto's venetian paintings, really vivid. As I say, I'm not arty so i either like or don't like, I just don't really get it. I enjoy having a wonder around galleries though. We went around one in Reykjavic once, in one room was a literal pile of rubbish, we wern't sure if it was art or if someone had a left a pile of rubbish, we were to embarresed to ask. I wouldn't know modern art if it smacked me in the face.

I never 'got' the 'hangers on' (all those that were given space in the same gallery) from all the 'popular' artists once upon a time but, I think one's appreciation improves with age. (I'm now 22 and speak with scant authority... )
As an edit: I saw all Turner's paints and stuff, including the harness he tied himself to masts with, at 'Tate Britain' a few years ago...I never have forgotten that guy's application.
It always makes me wonder how the artist of yesteryear would 'cope' with digital, or even film imagery - to help them along the way. A proviso migh be that the paintings we revere might not have been 'just so'...
