Telephone cable

Does anyone know if there is a standard type of cable for connecting your phone to the box on the wall or is it phone specific ?
Bought what I thought was a replacement but it does not work , now I am not sure if I bought the wrong thing or that the replacement was damaged .

I am not sure what you mean ?
I just need to know if there is a standard cable for instance mines is BT to rj11 but this comes in various guises , spent 3 hours on tinternet and 30 minutes onto Virgin support but I am none the wiser

Virgin box is wired the same as BT iirc, you don't need a Virgin specific phone/ cable.

Was your new cable labled as a phone replacement?.

Sounds like a straight through cable is required for an adsl modem but a crossover cable is required for a normal phone.

Any way you could pin out the orginal cable?.

Cable I bought was 6P 4W straight through and yes it said for phones .

I might be able to pin it out if I knew what pinning it out meant

Sorry!, checking continuity with a multimeter to see what wire goes where on the connectors.

It seem there are two different ways the rj11 connector on the phone itself could be wired unfortunately. 50/50 chance of buying the right one..

I don't mind having to buy two as long as one of them works can you point me in the right direction ?

Was on wilkos earlier but they only sell extension kits , would still need a cable from the telephone .

just look at the ends-its usually the green snd orange lined crossed for a crossover cable.
