Temporary Car Commuting

Slighly OT, but recently had the car back from the garage, and the bike into the bike shop:

Car, Service and repairs £420.00
Bike, Service and repairs£39.00

Really good justification not the use the car if possible!

I really would like to go car free, but there is no way SWMBO would even consider it. Still its only her that uses the car, so at least I can point the finger when the expensive bills come in

Also had to use the car to commute the other day, its a long story, but I arrived 20 minutes late, stressed and more tired than usual! Its the first and last time I'm using the car in three years!

I haven't seen any many brompton riders in Crewe apart from you.

There are about three regular brompton riders I see each morning, but they are ususally at the station, and we are all in a hurry to catch trains, so never really meet. I think Johnthemonkey is one, but I'm too chicken to walk up to the first bromptoneer and ask if he's the monkey

I'd never get anywhere if I talked to too many Brompton riders (though we usually acknowledge each other). I usually see at least 5 every morning, either on the train (comes in from Windsor), at Twickenham when I change (at least 2 get on the train I just got off, and then often another one on the Twickenham to Kingston train.

At night there is a girl who gets on with a black Brompton and a Nike bag and puffa coat, the imposing chap who stands under the stairs with the black beanie and black Brompton and I think gets the Reading train, and the nice older chap with the bright green Brompton and the young lady in Hi-Vis with the black Brompton who get off the Reading train at Twickenham at night.

Later this year I expect to be commuting into Central London and it'll be a veritable sea of Bromptons .....

If you're ever on SouthWest Trains, I'm what I've been nick named on here (and I like it) EasyRider Brompton because of the Moglo reflective skulls on the red Brompton and on my helmet.

i commute 3 days a week 160 miles round trip so no bike possible had to go where the work was. other days i work at home so build in a minimum 1.5 hour commute on the turbo through the winter.......

It used to take me over an hour to commute the 10 miles by car across Nottingham, which I hated. So we moved (other reasons as well).
Now I'monly 1 mile from work, and I never drive as it's quicker on bike, and walking takes about the same time (drive is 2.5 miles).
I now wish that we lived slightly further away as the commute on bike is too short!!! (I do have a few long-routes I use, so won't be moving house again)

But my point is we accept that it's OK to live miles from work and drive in. Over 50% of staff where I work live over 20 miles from work.

People used to live and work in the area they lived, but when cars and other transport links became cheaper and better, people started to work further away from where they lived, some by requirement, and some by choice, trouble is it is hard to reverse the situation now, although I think the current petrol prices and other economic issues will have a factor. there comes a point when you are spending more on transport than on a new mortgage. Only complication can be (as in our situation) where Mrs B works locally to where we live, and the closest job I could get was 40 miles away, but then I can use the trains for the main bit of the ride, and bike the rest of it. This means that one of us would always have to commute.

Depends how often you fill up. Every week or two, you might as well just fill up tot he top. The extra 20-30kg of fuel isn't going to do much against detours, stoping starting, your time etc. Also the price increase the next time you fill up

I now almost do no milegae in the car so I've stopped putting so much in Although it is fun to fill the car right up and not fill up again for another 6 months or so.

True, I left out the model - The Astra was a 200bhp petrol Turbo Coupe. A 747 is more economical!

I know, it is £37 to fill a Smart Car now. Hubby uses it now he is self employed, so it is essential - I gave it up for the Brommie (fueled by porridge, Starbucks coffee, and the occasional cinnamon roll).
