Tent tantrum

Across the rack is fine. The bungee for this is dual use if you have a half-eaten sandwich that requires temporary stowage (yes I have seen a cycle tourist with a half-eaten sandwich strapped between their bungee and tent!)

For me it does not matter as secure the pole on the underside of the top tube with velcro cable ties
The tent therefore squashes up into a tiny space and i normally carry it on top of the rack between the panniers

When camping I use four panniers and the tent goes into one of the rear ones.

Whatever is convenient.
I carry mine crossways under the flap of the saddlebag these days.
Longways between the panniers is normal when you have two rear panniers and nothing else on the rear - apart from anything else, you can get at the pannier contents without unstrapping the tent.

Depending what pannier configuration and which tent I am using controls on how I stow the tent, if I am using 4 panniers and either my Terra Nova Lazer or my Hogan they go in one of the rear panniers, if I have just my two rear panniers, the Lazer goes under the cover of one of the rear panniers, but if I have the Hogan then it goes lengthways along the top of the rear rack

We always carry the tent rolled up in a panner along with other damp stuff like the stove, pans and mugs (and the tent nearly always is damp in the morning. If the weather's dry, we hang it out at lunchtime so that I'm only carrying all that water for half of the day, not all of it. It dries out very quickly once it's put up in the evening).

The poles are too long to go in a pannier, and go longways on the rear rack (in their bag, along with my thermarest chair kit thingy). If they went cross-ways, it would make it awkward to get into the panniers during the day.

I don't hold with rules, but I don't like having to strap dozens of small bags and packages onto the bike; I'd rather just have four panniers and the pole bag.

You clearly have a method. How do you fasten them securely to the top tube?

I may try it but my tent's poles have the bent "gothic arch" thing. Is this likely to be a problem?

Even a 'Gothic Arch' tent (geodesic dome) tent the poles are usually mostly strait when in individual lengths
The solution is to carry them on the pole bag on the underside of your top tube.
The best way to secure them in position is using velcro cable ties
(But I guess a bungie would work as well)

This is the sort of thing, they come in different lengths, and are normally in packets of 20 or so

Maybe I'll give it a go as an experiment but am somewhat doubtful to be honest about putting poles there.
