I regularly get 'do you know x?' emails from LinkedIn featuring, eg, people I once worked on a project with, seven years ago. I'd rather not think about how LinkedIn is equipped to make those connections, let alone how many others - and who - out there can do the same & much more, without sending 'do you know?' messages.
Finding a person & who they might have worked with/where they worked is something that is easier than you might think.
Magnatom was found, within two weeks of him throwing down the challenge. Along with his previous three addresses.

The Internet reduces the degrees of separation between folk. I'm no longer surprised when school friends from forty years ago are suggested as contacts. I've used social media to chase down old friends.

I got a suggested friend on Facebook of someone I do know.... but never emailed him or rang his mobile. As far as I'm aware I have not contacted him by any means except face to face or my mobile to his works landline phone. I have no shared friends with him or 'like' his workplace..... so how did that work? I was well freaked out!
