Just trying to work out how to do those link things. The secret is

  1. open up another page on your web browser and find the page you want to link to
  2. copy the url of the page by double-clicking in the box with the text that begins with "http://" and then pressing the Ctrl and C keys.
  3. go back to your cycle chat post
  4. write the phrase you want to appear as the link
  5. select the phrase by left clicking on it and dragging the mouse across it
  6. click on the icon of the globe with the paper clip
  7. paste the url of the web page in the box using the Ctrl and V keys, overwriting the what's in the box

The HTML tags were a red herring. I wasted a lot of time trying to write
[a href="[url="http://www.timesonline.co.uk"]www.timesonline.co.uk[/url]"]see here[/a] and
<a href="www.timesonline.co.uk">see here</a> and lots of variations and it wouldn't work.
Single letter html tags, such as B,I,U and S seem to work in square brackets though.

Not as successful as I hoped. The smiley links to another webpage, but it's not obvious it does.

You can't seem to cut and paste smilies that easily either.

IIRC someone said to click on the icon with the blue globe and the paperclip in the toolbar above where you are typing the post, and then cut anf paste your "location". Well, not your location , the location of what you want us to see. I have tried it and it is easier I think.

Of course, you might want to do it the proper, more complicated way. ;)

Ummm... perhaps it doesn't work because it's not actually BBCode? Try [ url=http://example.com/ ]Link text [ /url ] for links.
