As we were approaching the Dartford crossing yesterday I happened to glance up at HS1 just the other side. "That's a strange colour for a Eurostar carriage" I thought. As the rear locomotive went past it was obviously a TGV. I've done a quick search but can't see any mention of TGV being used in place of a Eurostar.

Any ideas?

Sure it's not the new Eurostar rolling stock?

Nope this was definitely the shape of a standard TGV with the grey/blue livery but I have just googled the new Euro just to be sure

I imagine that if it was one of those it would be the TGV 'reseau' (French for 'network') - 8 carriages and second generation TGV with tri-current operation I think. I doubt that it would be in service for cross channel services as it's not fireproofed and properly geared up for the channel tunnel so would be illegal to run. Perhaps it is being tested for HS1 only services from Ashford to Start Pancras? It would be significantly faster (186mph) than the current Javelins which are limited to 140mph

It could be a publicity stunt by Bombardier. Put a TGV, next to a 222, and take some pictures for marketing purposes I guess.

lost somewhere
I went out to Bourg St Maurice on a Eurostar from St Pancras a couple of years ago. Quite a lot of the journey was spent stationary, waiting for the next TGV to take priority on the line. Is there any chance of keeping this interloper stuck in a siding somewhere near Ashford?

I must confess I do like trains - I enjoy rail travel, I admire the big machinery, and I'm a fan of their environmental credentials compared to cars.

Downside is I know little about them
