Thanks to Bus Drivers

I have been witness to some great driving from bus drivers on my commute recently. Just today a First Bus sat behind me for about 30 seconds, a nice distance behind, where in the past buses/vans/cars etc have pushed past. he probably could have got past me, but he chose to take the safe option of holding back. As I turned off I made sure I gave a thumbs up. Thanks!

Also at a roundabout a bus waiting to come on (Arriva this time) could have pulled on in front of me. There was a reasonable space. He didn't and decided to wait until I went past. Brilliant.

I really do think, overall, that bus drivers are some of the best drivers out there. Of course there are the odd one or two muppets, but in general, they are very patient.

I'm just annoyed I haven't got the positioning of my rear camera sorted yet. Had it caught the bus on camera I would have posted it on youtube. Instead I got 25 minutes of the sky!

I've been having the same experience with buses. Haven't had any problems at all with any of them, in fact they've also been brilliant.

I've been blabbing on about busses a lot recently. I've found them (especially in London) to be really well trained, always stopping, even for the mere "whiff" of cyclist.

Glad to hear the more "regional" firms are sharpening up their acts too.

Mag, if you have positive footage, the bus companies love to see it. (all helps to improve bus/cycle relations)

Which roads in London do you cycle Jonny? I tend to be on the East India Dock Road and Commercial Road. I used to think they were just used to seeing me and know that I'm not going to RLJ or keep passing them just to be overtaken a few yards up the road but it sounds like they're all just being more considerate as a whole. Excellent.

I can only agree with all of the above. Most drivers on my route are great; very patient and courteous.

Same here,they often either wait behind me or wait for me to pass the stop before they pull out...either way they get a wave "thankyou" The odd car driver has been good too so they get a wave...when will it stop,my arm hurts !

Mostly the A21 out of Chislehurst to Lewisham, then Old Kent Road, the Mall, Parliament Hill, Ken High St. But even when I ran through Peckham/ Kennington, I still witnessed some really good Bus driving ( here ).

I totally agree with you on the point of familiarity. I am POSITVE that good riding (ie not jumping lights, thanking careful drivers and apologising for F*cks ups on my part...which can be numerous) plays an important part in this, I see the same cyclists each day so am certain many of the same drivers see me ......possibly recognise me (or even forgive me) for my actions.

This is the point that i think a ot of riders who jump lghts fail to see......at the end of the day, you reap what you sow

Hmm. Although in theory that is a good idea, I'm not sure magnatom turning up at the local depot is a good idea. As HJ hints at, there are some drivers who think I am the spawn of satan. Anyway, in Glasgow, buying chocolates for a group of almost exclusively men, might be mis-construed...

Hopefully, I will catch some of the good driving on my rear view camera and post it. Then I will certainly write to the companies.

I occasionally look over at bloodbus (now changed name). One poster continually mentions how if they spot me at my work they will 'cause me injury' (though not as polite as that, obviously!).
