The bike is dead! I feel no remorse.

My hybrid has been off the road awaiting new sprockets so I've been using my old, infrequently used, badly maintained Mountain bike. I got the call on Friday that she was all done and ready to collect! I set off on the MB, looking forward to an easier commute next week. After cycling about 1/2 a mile, I felt a regular rumbling. Stopped to check and the rear wheel felt loose, but I carried on. It got worse, and worse, and then much worse, until it was almost un-ridable. It was actually rather funny, punishing my old bike....I'm sure it would've been easier to push, but I saw it as a challenge. So I made it home, the last couple of miles I was putting in massive effort, and struggling to get near 10 mph. It took me 1hr 5 mins, (usually around 45 minutes) to get home. I wouldn't usually be so cruel to a bike, but like I say, my other bike's now fixed, and I'm looking to buy another bike in the new year anyway.

What was the prob? seems a shame to skip it if its just a wheel bearing or something fixable.

Yeah, it's just the bearings. I'll probably fix it, but I suspect it may sit at the back of the garage for some months. Hopefully, I'll get another bike after Xmas, so I may just put the MB on Freecycle.
