I had the good fortune of spending the weekend in Montpellier, in the South of France this weekend. Despite the events in Nice, which is along the coast, I managed to have an OK time.

It is an excellent city for Cycle paths, they are simply everywhere and have been for some time.

I managed to cycle from the city along the canals all the way to the coast. I was with my brother who is getting back into cycling after a few years. It's very very flat and you can literally cycle everywhere. The cycle lanes are in pretty good condition, the occasional bit of glass, a parked car or two. Most junctions have cycle traffic lights and car drivers are on the whole considerate and courteous.

You can cycle all along the coast from e.g. Montpellier to Palavas and to La Grande-Motte. I'm told they've even removed some car parking to make way for cyclists at La Grand-Motte.

So for those venturing to the south, do please consider Montpellier!
