It was the shocking experience of HEARING a big crash behind me on my third Cape Argus race that made me decide not to do it again. The sound of outrage in the voice of the woman who went down first and then the thump and scrape of bodies and bikes hitting the road were horrible; I had already wondered what my boss would say if I rang him from a Cape Town hospital on the following Monday to say I'd bust a hip and wouldn't be back for a few weeks so this just concentrated my mind. On top of that, baggage handlers had had a good go at smashing up my bike box on my first trip so I decided I'd been lucky up to then and not to push it. I heard later that people were helicoptered out of the crash.

Crashing out at the Velodrome must be an experience, even if your initial off is quite mild - then slowly sliding down into other riders.
