I have been fortunate enough to have had my dream bicycle - a retro-classic lugged steel tourer - actually built, and better still since it was made by Enigma, whose workshop is only 15 miles away from me, I was able to photograph Mark Reilly, their master builder, as he brazed the frame.

If I had the ££ I would like to go on a Dave Yates course to build something like that for myself.
I already own a couple of very good lugged steel frames, so it would be pure indulgence.

Impertinent question (ignore if you wish) what sort of dosh does one of those go for?

THe frame and fork were about £1300 - plus a bit more for polishing the stainless steel lugs. After that it is what you spec and since it is bespoke, you can do what you like. I kind of pushed the boat out on mine, with Phil Wood touring hubs and BB and Gilles Berthoud stainless mudguards etc, so mine ended up kind of pricey.... Even so, it was less than a lot of mass-produced racing bikes you can buy on the internet, which kind of amazes me because to have a bike built for you, right there, and exquisitely crafted, seems so much more desirable

Then he sells it to you and it gives years of pleasure.
