I'd love to see a company with money to burn pick up on the velomobile concept. I'm sure if they poured as much into marketing as car manufacturers do for their vehicles, they could revolutionise personal transport.
Make it look cool and that's half the battle won. Recumbents are weird and you're still exposed to the weather but with a velomobile, you could even have a little boot to keep your kit dry at the back. It'd take some work to overcome the initial, "What? It's like a pedal car? Are you having a laugh? That's only one step up from Fred Flintsone!" but with enough cash, I think it could be done.
Think of how some bicycle manufacturers switched to making cars way back when, why shouldn't that happen again but in reverse?
If small electric cars like the Volkwagen linked above become popular, it should be even easier to draw attention to the fact that electricity is still a dirty fuel, consuming coal/uranium and becoming more expensive everyday due to the increased demand. Velomobiles are the future! Or at least, they should be.
