It's the old chicken and egg situation; the more people that cycle (instead of drive) the less vehicles there will be on our roads, the safer it will be, journeys will be quicker due to less congestion, people will be fitter....et al...........

Not while people are selfish and car-obsessed it won't, but hey ho.

The usual London-centric and city cycling bias doesn't seem to be winning the Guardian too many fans among the cycling fraternity though the HGV issue needs investigating. It's obviously a matter of some concern that women seem more vulnerable to being invisible to HGVs.
Studies suggest this is down to two reasons.
  1. More men cycle through red lights than women
  2. Men are generally quicker off the line than women.
This only takes into account the type of incident where the lorry is behind the cyclist, and not the left hook.
