I know: I just get a bit frustrated at English lacking a gender-neutral third-person singular pronoun. The rather formal "one" isn't in common use.

They IS the gender neutral third person singular pronoun:

Eg from wiki:
Somebody left their umbrella in the office. Would they please collect it?

"But a journalist should not be forced to reveal their sources"

It's a bit more complicated than that...
They IS the gender neutral third person singular pronoun:

"But a journalist should not be forced to reveal their sources"
  • "Eche of theym sholde . . . make theymselfe redy."— Caxton, Sonnes of Aymon (c. 1489)[31]
  • "If a person is born of a . . . gloomy temper . . . they cannot help it."— Chesterfield, Letter to his son (1759);[17] quoted in Fowler's.[18]
