All I know is I can't get that "Skyfoe... lah lah lah... Crumboe... lah lah lah... Stantoe.... lah lah lah Skyfoe" caterwauling woman out of my head.

I think Skyfall shared another Oscar for something or other didn't it? One of the less glamorous ones, editing or some such. I think they also did a James Bond tribute bit in the ceremony too.

Daniel Day-Lewis the first person to win 3 'Best Actor' Oscars.

William Shatner did something or other too didn't he? Some spoof thing. I meant to look for it on youtube. I recall his reading of Rocket Man, that was well done.

Edit: and Shirley Bassey sang 'Goldfinger', I think I would have watched it for that alone!

What was that like? Does she still have a voice? Goldfinger and Shirley Bassey's rendition of it used to be my favourite Bond theme, but I am not so sure on either of them now.

The theme to Skyfall seems to be a return to the past, but it's still not John Barry.

Yes, I too reckon it's an old school Bond theme. I don't know if that was the brief or not, but Adele gets a 'well done' from me for it.

Bassey had a good voice up to a few years ago, I'd like to think it's still there but I don't know.

Btw, this is one of my favourite photos of her....

Ah the Oscars are guaranteed to divide opinion!

I think of them as a promotional exercise. Glitz and razzamataz, a bit of fun even, but never a serious evaluation of the year's films. Of the film industry perhaps but not of the films. I can find it strange that a single film will clean up as they often do. Or perhaps not strange exactly, it might just be a reflection of that fact that a film has the budget to spend in all areas rather than a recognition of the individual talent in that area.

It was a strange affair with some evident winners and a few losers too.
Shirley Bassie (at 76) sang a belter, Barbra Striesand (71) was as good as ever, there were far too many long blonde hairdo's (man and women) Daniel Day Lewis gave the only acceptance speech that wasn't a list of names but the biggest loser was the compere (who struggled to imitate Ricky Gervais) and the show itself (two hours stretched to four).

Having seen Django Unchained on Sunday night, I reckon Christoph Waltz thoroughly deserved best supporting actor. Classic Tarantino - blood, guts and, in parts, very funny indeed.

Alexander McQueen (the brand) should leave grey alone, Jessica Chastain looked gggrrrreeeat in Armani, Helen Hunt was dishy in H&M (!) and those were not Anne Hathaway's nipples. In other news the Daytona 500 was terrific, but not as terrific as the 2012 edition.

I'm one of a small, privileged number to have actually worked with Daniel Day-Lewis.

But unfortunately it was not in an artistic capacity - we were both unloading lorries in Deptford and he was doing a summer job before going off to drama college, maybe in 73 or 74. To make the job more interesting, we turned the job into a race involving a lot of flying cartons, knowing that once we'd done a lorry the boss would leave us to our own devices till the next one came in. This of course is where I misguidedly claim that it was working with me that taught him the skill of throwing himself into a role.....

Nice lad though.

The judges, (actor luvvies) voting for a film made by actor luvvies, about other actor luvvies, heroically rescuing some other actor luvvies, getting voted best picture?

What are the chances of that?

Just a bunch of back slapping self congratulatory lovies. Just like ALL industry awards. I had the misfortune of having to attending an awards 'dinner' last year ( always managed to doge that bullet up until then), there's seven hours of my life I'll never get back. Corporate clap-trap. Best this, best that, never an award for 'This years biggest brown nosing bastard' is there?

Yep, they can be horribly self-referential (or reverential even). To the point of alienation of your everyday cinema go-er.

I remember a Tim Robbin's film called 'The Player'; film buffs and critics raved about it and it won a number of awards and nominations. It was about the film industry, had many cameo appearances and numerous industry references.... but my god was it dull.
