If anyone's at a loose end...just noticed this in the listings, starting in 10 minutes (Freeview 14) - a wonderful amiable period piece - '50s Hollywood's take on Ould Oireland: a beautiful country full of feisty, buxom wenches, whose inhabitants devote their lives to heavy drinking and amusing, extended and entirely good-humoured come-one-come-all brawls. Top 'o the mornin' to yiz!

Lovely film, and the only one of John Wayne's I could ever imagine watching. My father knew Barry Fitzgerald's father, when they were in the same branch of the Vincent de Paul in Dublin. They used to take food, clothing and coal to people in the appalling tenements. Glad to see that the film gives a presence to the Church of Ireland in the form of the Reverend Mr Playfair.

The fight seen goes on for ever doesn't it?
They even have time for a drink, before finishing the fight.

Go raibh maith agat. I suspected it was a fellow-countryman, although I missed the most obvious one. Personally, I find Flann O'Brien and his alter egos much more readable than Wilde.

I have to say, I loved The Third Policeman, and At Swim Two Birds. But I also like some of the writing of Liam O'Flaherty as well.Hard to find these works in the States, but I live near the University where Dalkey Archive Press for North America was located. Also, sometimes over here, Flann O'brien is referenced as Brian O'Nolan, or Brian O'Nuallian. Now, I think Dalkey Archive Press is in Texas
