Interesting, but flawed.

Ah, sorry, it was presented in my news feed, I did not realise it was written in the 1970s!

Still interesting though. While I disagree with him over the originans of the problem, and don't buy into some of the commie wistfulness, I think he's largely right on the solution. T'was a genuinely interesting read.
apparently 1.2 billion of the dam things on the planet now, (about 1 for every 3.5 people of drivng age), we're a very strange species.

if average mileage for vehicles was 8,000 and tyre wear was 100mg per km, then the tire dust (which is basically a toxic microplastic) then we are dumping 1.5 million tonnes of micro plastics per year into the enviroment just from tyre wear.
Would bikes doing the same journey be any better?

I've often wondered where the tyre and brake dust ends up. Were not knee deep in it, so its gone somewhere.
Probably a significant proportion is washed out to sea, when it isn't simply captured in soil structure and ingested by wildlife and our own food.

Masterpiece.

See also Ivan Illich's Energy & Equity.
I just sampled a portion of that, bookmarked for later, thank you, looks like a great read.
