The concurrent thread about the fishy reviews for another chippy, brought back happy memories of the Walnut Cafe.

Now it seems to be a rival fish n chips, but back in 1966, and a very damp Easter, it was a just a cafe or coffee house.

We were camping, but got so wet, we spent a lot of time in the Walnut Cafe.

Happy days

Back in the mid/late 1980s, it was run by a young couple. I seem to remember that she was Scottish. They were great.
We (family of three) once went in near to closing time and asked if we could still get a meal. We were regulars (for the week we were in the Lakes) and they said it would be fine. Massive meal prepared and served, while the "Closed" sign was on the door. No dirty looks, no mutterings about being late - just good service with a smile.
I was gutted when we went back a few years later and new people had take over.
Happy days, indeed.

FYI - The bakery on the main street, opposite the Costa, will ring a bell later in the day to say everything is half price - run as it's very popular lol.

Didn't see the Walnut Chippy as it's now called, but it sounds great back in the day.

Sadly, that type of establishment is becoming very rare. Back in our era Sunday clubruns had no trouble finding a friendly cafe, there seemed to be one in every village you passed through. Now if there's anything at all out in the sticks it will be a burger bar or a Pizza place.

I don’t where you reside but in North and East Yorkshire there are dozens of decent cafes. Our club has a yearly poll of who the members think is the best one in the area.
