I work on a zero hours contract in my school and it gives me much greater freedom and a total absence of bureaucracy. I love the flexibility.

Anyhow, today I discovered that I've been underpaid by 16% backdated to the first of September.

A back of an envelope calculation indicated that the transport to and from my summer tour will be covered along with a decent proportion of the living expenses out on the road.

Is that because they forgot to add on pro rata for holidays, and Bank Holidays?

Nope. It's because I had claimed for contact time only and was unaware that I was entitled to be paid planning and preparation time. Normally, salaried teachers get 'free periods' where they plan and mark work. I teach every available lesson Monday to Thursday and do one lesson after school Monday to Thursday with planning and marking done before and after the full day's teaching for a twenty five period 'week' and saw Fridays off without pay as the reward. A normal teaching load for a salaried teacher in the school is a twenty period week with five free periods available over the five days.

I'm also entitled to holiday pay albeit for fewer days than salaried staff. As an extra 'bonus' I'll also get paid for 'snow days'.

I was happy with my lot up to now. Now I'm happier with my lot.
