It was hot today, brutally hot with really high humidity -33'C. Saps the energy out of you -plus air quality is not too good, and you have to keep really well hydrated. The air feels heavier and you're really having to push through it.

Strange thing I like: when I get into work I'm really hot so I take a cold shower. The cold water hits my head -by the time it reaches the end of my back it feels like it's hot water!

Thing I don't like: coming back, about 1 km to go, I get sweat in my eye, and no matter how much I wipe my eye, the sweat gets back in my eye after about 100m. I had to keep stopping as I couldn't see -not counting it's pretty painful -that last kilometer took ages!

I sweat a lot, too, and keep it out of my eyes by wearing a sponge-rubber sweat band. You can stop and wring it out when it gets saturated, but that seldom happens on my commute. It may get saturated on longer rides in the heat.

A good way of keeping the sweat out of your eyes is to smear some vaseline across the eyebrows and then down the sides of your eyes. This channels the sweat away and works for me in the really hot weather!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Things I like - nice dry days with a slight breeze, considerate motorists all the way in (it does happen!) and gaps in traffic every time you need one to pass something, or avoid an obstacle. Those days where turning the cranks seems to come easily, and the miles fly by almost effortlessly.

I tend to let a cycling cap (under a helmet in my case) absorb the sweat. On cooler days, the pads in the helmet do a decent enough job, but they're not up to the task on really hot ones!

I use a skull cap made of wicking material under my helmet - works really well.

Love hot days - although haven't had many on my commutes this year - the ones where the air feels warm going into your chest - had about one or two days like that so far. Feeling refreshed when you get into work - whilst most folk are still asleep.

I suppose one of the unique things about ones cycle commute compared to other modes of transport is that you know how long it's going to take you.

That's very true.

I'm thinking the sweat problem was caused when my overly long eyebrows (my wife does call me eccentric too, yippee!) were stuck too far to the side of my ears with an enthusiastic application of vaseline.

Yes sunny weather does sound nice -until you get that horrible sticky humidity which makes you feel like you need a shower after 1.2 seconds. Having said that, I'd still take it over rain. I hate cycling in the rain!

Next time it rains like it did yesterday I'm going old-skool triathlete style; trunks and cycling shoes. Can you get prescription swimming goggles? those woulda helped.

Lucky boys!
London had rain from 05:00 through the day and well into the night yesterday - as did many other areas in the UK.
How we would love a bit of sun induced sweat!;)
